space is becoming foundational infrastructure and won’t be a standalone economy in the way we describe it today.
the space economy framing - the one that conjures asteroid mining, lunar manufacturing, and self-sustaining civilisations off-world - depends on people actually living in space. on social and political ecosystems that don’t exist and probably won’t for a long time. in the meantime, what’s actually being built looks nothing like that. what we’ve got is quiet, persistent, invisible-to-most infrastructure that sits in orbit and extends the capabilities of industries that have existed for centuries.
i’ve spoken with Plasma Orbital’s founders, Leo Pauly and Grace Samosir, who call it the “orbital infrastructure layer”. they describe it as the idea that every strategically important terrestrial industry will eventually extend part of its infrastructure into orbit. they believe satellites aren’t a new economy but a new substrate for old ones.
and they’ve chosen to build the defence case first.
sovereign nations have a problem. maritime economic zones - which are areas of ocean they have legal jurisdiction over - can be many times the size of their land territory. for a small island state, that’s an enormous amount of ocean to monitor. patrol vessels can’t cover it. surveillance aircraft are expensive to run and can’t provide persistent 24/7 monitoring. AIS tracking can be spoofed or switched off by anyone who knows they’re being watched and the result of all this is a structural blind spot where sovereign nations technically own vast stretches of ocean and practically cannot see most of it.
Plasma Orbital’s answer is a small fleet of AI-powered micro-satellites positioned to provide continuous coverage of a specific geographic zone. they believe in persistent presence - which of course is the idea - through solutions they have build and deployed. the kind of capability that currently requires expensive, fragile alternatives - when it’s achievable at all.
the technology case is straightforward. what isn’t is everything else that comes with the current process. but Plasma Orbital is making great momentum.
selling to sovereign governments is one of the hardest commercial problems in the world.
start with export controls. satellite technology with military or intelligence applications falls under some of the most restrictive trade frameworks that exist. in the US, that’s ITAR. in the UK and Europe, similar dual-use export licensing regimes apply. what this means in practice is that the list of countries you are legally permitted to sell to is not determined by your business development team. it’s determined by foreign policy. and foreign policy changes. sometimes in moments. a government that is an acceptable customer today can become a restricted one tomorrow because a bilateral relationship your company has no influence over shifted.
there’s also the procurement timeline. government contracts for sovereign monitoring infrastructure don’t close in quarters. they close in years - through procurement cycles that involve multiple ministries, security clearance requirements, parliamentary budgets, and in some cases treaty-level approvals. the sales motion looks nothing like enterprise software. it looks like diplomacy with a product attached.
and then there’s the customer list problem. in defence-adjacent technology, who you sell to is your reputation. a single controversial contract - a nation with a disputed human rights record, a government that ends up on the wrong side of a geopolitical shift - can close doors with every other sovereign customer you were pursuing. the reputational risk isn’t hypothetical. it’s a live constraint that shapes which opportunities you pursue and which you decline before they’re even offered.
none of this is a reason not to build here. but it reframes what the real work is. the technology is the entry ticket. navigating the regulatory, diplomatic, and reputational complexity of sovereign government sales is the actual company-building problem.
the founders who get this right aren’t ahead on the technology. they’re ahead on sovereign distribution - how a capability moves from orbit to national deployment through export law, procurement, and government trust that compounds over years.
complexity at this level will simply concentrate markets.
further, the unit economics are changing fast enough that the timing question has a real answer. launch costs have fallen from tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram in the Space Shuttle era to below three thousand dollars today. SpaceX is targeting sub-five hundred dollars per kilogram with Starship. that compression doesn’t just make satellites cheaper to put in orbit - it makes sovereign orbital capabilities newly rational for a much larger set of potential customers. a small fleet of micro-satellites for persistent maritime monitoring now costs in the range that a few years ago you’d spend on a single patrol vessel.
the window Plasma Orbital is building into is about what’s newly economically defensible for governments who couldn’t have justified the conversation previously which changes who’s in the room. when more governments are in the room, the diplomatic and regulatory complexity becomes the differentiator. i believe that a fundamental level - this is what founders in the space need to get right.
the founders getting space right right now are the pragmatists who took this vision seriously enough and translated it into a specific industry problem, found the precise constraint in that problem, and are building for that constraint and nothing else.
Plasma Orbital isn’t building a space company. it’s building maritime monitoring infrastructure that happens to sit in orbit which truly matters for success.
the space economy is a distraction. the orbital infrastructure layer - the quiet extension of Earth’s strategically important industries into orbit - is where the real work is happening. and the founders building it are barely thinking about space at all.
